Big idea
Of all the underdog stories we find in Scripture, perhaps the most remarkable is that of the early church. You see, before Jesus left the earth, He commissioned a small group of His followers to spread His message throughout the world. Incredibly, this small group of followers obeyed His called, overcame obstacle after obstacle and persecution after persecution, and the world was never the same as a result. God's message literally spread throughout the world, and the church grew and grew. This early church is our topic of discussion today, and as we study, we will be encouraged by the way God used a small group of underdogs and changed the world.

- Much like Sagebrush, how have you seen God continue to grow you and do big things in your life regardless of what life throws at you?
- Read Acts 1:1-8. What stands out to you about this declaration from Jesus?
In my first book I told you, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit. During the forty days after he suffered and died, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.
Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. John baptized with[b] water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
The Ascension of Jesus
So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?”
He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

- Read Acts 2:42-47. How is this description of the early church different than how the church would be described today? How is it similar?
The Believers Form a Community
42All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper[1]), and to prayer.
43A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity[2]— 47all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.

Moving forward
Sharing meals together was a key part of the early church's rhythm. This rhythm serves as an example for us today. With your small group, plan a time to follow the early church's example and share a meal. This does not have to be in person. Make plans to share a meal together virtually over the next two weeks. As you share a meal, thank God for the opportunity to eat and fellowship with each other and for the blessing of having fellowship with members of the body of Christ.
