Devotional

Who knows the great commission? If not, that is okay! We are going to memorize the great commission. The reason we are challenging each other to do this is because the great commission is one of the most important commandments in all of scripture. Those verses tell us exactly who we are meant to be and what we are supposed to do with our lives. We are supposed to be disciples who make disciples.

We have the amazing opportunity to be a part of God’s kingdom on earth and this is how He wants to use us. To share the gospel and show other people how to become followers of Jesus. The best thing you can do for someone you love.

Here at Remix we are trying to live out the great commission in many ways. In fact we are living out the principles of the great commission when we live out the standard we set for ourselves this weekend at Remix. Can anyone remember what the third standard we decided to commit to this weekend was?

Everyone Bring One

Our goal at Remix is to get an opportunity to share the most important news with the people we love. Some of you may feel like we talk about bringing your friends to Remix a lot. That’s true. But it is not because we don’t care about you or because we are only interested in how many people we can get in the room. No, we know that you have friends who are lost. People who don’t know that there is a God who loves them enough to die on the cross for their sins so they can be saved. Saved from hell and living a meaningless life on earth. Your friends need to hear that and we want to help you make that happen. Don’t you want to see the people you love have the relationship with Jesus you have been so blessed to have?

Well that all starts with a simple invite. It starts with saying “Hey come with me to Remix, I think you will have a great time.” Just that simple invite could be the thing that plants the seed that changes your friend's life. But it can’t happen if you don’t invite your friends.

So we have an event coming up this week right? I believe this event is going to be a ton of fun but I also believe it is going to be really encouraging and potentially life changing for you and your friends. It’s up to you to get your friend there.

This weekend we all picked one person to invite to come with us to one night. Hopefully you took that seriously and have already done it, but if not can I ask why? What are you waiting for? Are you afraid of what they might do or say? Well we want to help you with that fear today.

Break the ice

What is the best event you have ever been invited to? (could be a birthday party, school event, etc.)

Small group questions

1. Who remembers the great commission? Let’s all read it together. Write the verse down and start memorizing it.

Matthew 28:18-20NLT

18Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations,[1] baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Translation notes (1)
  1. 28:19 Or all peoples.
  1. What does Matthew 28:18-20 command us to do?
  2. What does it mean to be a disciple? How do we help make disciples of other people?
  3. What is the potential benefit of inviting our friends to church?
  4. What stops you from inviting your friends to church?

Moving forward

Our goal is to each invite one friend with us to one night. We know inviting can be intimidating so let’s practice. Split up the group into trios and have them take turns inviting each other to church. Practice different scenarios and questions your friends may have so you guys can feel prepared to invite your friends.

After practicing for a while, have each student tell everyone the name of who they are inviting and how they plan to invite them. Pray together over those names.
