Break the ice
When it comes to relationships, what is a red flag for you?
Small group questions
- Why are red flags so important? What is at stake if we ignore them?
- Read 1 Corinthians 13:5-7. Which of the traits listed in these verses is the most challenging for you? Why or why not?
It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
- Do you see a connection between all of these things that love is and love is not? If so, what is the connection?
- Why do you think this kind of love is difficult for many people to show?
- Why is it important to look for people in our dating relationships who model selflessness?
- Who is someone who has modeled selflessness in your life? What have you learned from them?
- What is one way you can begin living selflessly, thinking of other people above yourself, this week?
Moving forward
Most of you live in homes where it is easy to be selfish.
- You can make a mess and your parents or someone else might clean up.
- You can keep your stuff away from your brothers or sisters.
- You can spend hours on end texting your friends or scrolling through social media rather than connecting with anyone in your family.
What if instead of being selfish, you were giving to those at home. What if you cleaned up after yourself, shared your stuff, or at least put your phone down for 30 minutes and tried to connect with your family. People would notice if you did this and it would make you less selfish. Before you can meet a person who is unselfish, you have to become that person first. Make the decision that you are going to take some steps to live this way this coming week and plan on reporting back to your group what you did. You get bonus points too if you post this verse on your social media and memorize it...
Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.

As a group, commit to read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 every day for the next week. Let these verses be a reminder to you of the kind of people you all want to be and the kind of people you want to look for in dating relationships. To take it a step further, each day, pick a different characteristic to practice every day, asking God to help you become like Him in the way that you love others.
