Is God Real? - Week 4

Big idea

Hi Remix, I am so glad you are here today. We are in the last week of our series, Is God Real. We have been learning how to answer this question confidently when someone asks us. We are looking at evidence that we can point to that shows us that God is certainly real and the Creator of the whole world. Over the past few weeks, we have looked at 5 reasons we can be confident that God is real:

1. Every effect has a cause.
2. Every created thing has a Creator.
3. Every design has a Designer.
4. Without a Maker, there is no lasting meaning for life.
5. Our fossil records point to creation, not evolution.

Today, we are going to talk about one last reason why evolution ultimately does not hold up: the complexity of everything that God created. Imagine if you just listened to a brand new song, and it was the best song you had ever heard. Immediately you would be wondering who in the world sang (and wrote) that song. The creativity, complexity, and greatness of the song points to its creator. The same is true with the earth and everything in it. It points us straight to our Creator, God.

Not only does the complexity of the earth point to a creation instead of evolution, the way the earth supports human life points to a Creator.

Let’s look at the cell, for example. Darwin did not have the technology that we have today when examining the cell.

In Darwin’s day, microscopes could only magnify things up to 300 times. Because of that, Darwin could only see the basic elements of a cell. Today we have much, much more powerful microscopes and can see just how truly complex the cell is. That complexity points to a Creator.

Imagine on the first day of school and you opened your locker to find pictures of you and your friends, your favorite snack, all of your books you needed in order starting from your first class to your last. Clearly that locker was set up just for you, intentionally and on purpose by someone else. (Maybe your girlfriend or boyfriend. Maybe your best friend. Maybe your mom.) Your locker points straight to the person who intentionally and purposefully created it for you. It is too personal to have been randomly prepared for you. In the same way, the earth was set up perfectly for us and life on this earth. For example, the position of the earth is just the right distance from the sun. If we were any closer to the sun, we would burn. If we were any further, we would freeze. That is just one example of how perfectly designed the earth is for life.

The human body is extremely complex.

There is enough DNA in each person’s body to reach the moon and back 10,000 times.

It is for reasons like this that David wrote in Psalm 139 “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.

Besides the complex design of the human body, humans were also ingrained with morals, we have an understanding of right and wrong.

We can see just by paying attention to the people around us that we all have a sense of right and wrong. When you were a kid, you knew quickly that it was not right when someone hit you or your brother or sister stole your candy. We were ingrained with a sense of right and wrong. Dogs and cats on the other hand, were not. You cannot reason with an animal to tell them why stealing another animal’s treat is wrong. They will just not understand.

Think about it, if there is not a God, where do our concepts of right and wrong come from? This understanding of right and wrong does, indeed, come from God who made humans in His image. That is why humans have the sense of right and wrong and animals do not.

Friends, the complexity of the world and everything in it is too purposeful and intentional to be randomly created out of nothing. There must be an intelligent Creator and Designer behind it, and that is God.

We are going to talk more about this in our groups now. It’s going to be a great discussion as we continue with the last part of this series: Is God real?

3. What was David’s response to acknowledging the complexity and beauty of God’s creation?
4. Read Genesis 1:26. How does the fact that humans have a sense of what is right and wrong point to the existence of God?
5. How does the complexity of creation around us point to the fact that God created it?
6. What is one part of the world that God created that is so complex that it points to God as the Creator?
7. How can you have a conversation with friends about the complexity of the world and how that points to a Creator?

Moving forward

Not only does what we have studied help us be confident that the world was created by God, our intentional and purposeful Creator, it also helps us share with our friends who have questions about how the world and everything in it came to exist. Divide up into groups of two (or three if your group has an uneven number) and take turns explaining to your partner why we can have confidence that God does exist and He is the Creator of the world. Go through all 6 reasons we have talked about over the last 4 weeks. It’s okay if you are a little rusty or will need your partner’s help. This is why we practice! The more we practice, the more we will be prepared to have conversations with people in the future.
