Break the ice
What do you normally do when you are feeling down or depressed (be by yourself, hang out with friends, listen to music, or something else)? Why?
Small group questions
- Why do you think evolution is often shared as truth instead of a theory?
- Read Psalm 6:6. Can you relate, or have you ever been able to relate to these feelings King David expressed in these verses? Why or why not?
6I am worn out from sobbing.
All night I flood my bed with weeping,
drenching it with my tears.
- Why is being honest about how we are feeling so important? What happens when we hide or stuff away our feelings?
- We have a lot of stories in the Bible about people who were depressed or experienced feelings of depression like David in these verses we just read, Elijah, and Naomi, to name a few. Why do you think we have stories about them in the Bible?
- Read Psalm 34:18. How does this verse give you hope when you feel depressed?
18The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;
he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
- Why is someone’s presence when we feel depressed so comforting? Why is it important to make sure these people are helping the situation rather than hurting it?
- Not only do we need to be honest with God about how we are feeling, but it is also helpful for us to share with trusted friends, mentors, or family members when we are struggling. Who is one person you can reach out to when you are struggling with feelings of depression?
Moving forward
One of the things that we can do when we are struggling with feelings of depression is to help someone else. This may sound strange to you, but it really is one way to help us shift our focus off of ourselves and on to someone else we can help. Whether you are struggling with feelings of depression today or you are not, think about one person you can help today. Share with your group what you decide, and plan to ask each other next week how it went and how it impacted not only that person, but also you!
