Some faced jeers and flogging, while still others were chained and put in prison. They were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated--the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.
2“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans[1] of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
from ancient times.”

A pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet. All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me. They divide my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.
4But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.[1]

It came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests!
The son of man is given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshipped him. His dominion is forever and it will never disappear. He will rule over a kingdom that will never be destroyed.
The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us."
