Deliberate: The Final Hours of Jesus' Life

“My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.”

…face down on the ground Jesus prayed, “My father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will, not mine.”

⁵³Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

“Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.”

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.

“He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee, even as far as this place”.

I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

¹⁶The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers.

“…If you release this man you are no friend of Caesar’s; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.”

“On that day…I will make the sun go down at noon, and darken the earth in broad daylight…I will make it like the mourning for an only son, and the end of it like a bitter day.”

²¹God made him who had no sin to be sin^[1] for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

“Father, into your hands, I commit my spirit” …and then Jesus died.

“Greater love has no one than this: that he lay down his life for his friends.”
