Drawing Close to God
1What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? 2You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. 3And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure.
1. Understand What Forgiveness Is and What It’s Not
Spiritual Blessings
7He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.
2. Receive Forgiveness Personally
17Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens.[1] He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.[2]
Translation notes (2)
- 1:17a Greek from above, from the Father of lights.
- 1:17b Some manuscripts read He never changes, as a shifting shadow does.
12He has removed our sins as far from us
as the east is from the west.
9But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
3. Learn to Forgive Others
31Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
